The dandelions and daisies that grow in vacant lots and country roadsides, Lerner informs us, are imports brought over by early settlers; but the tall grasses and wild flowers that grow in our few remaining prairies and prairie patches are ""native Americans."" Here she takes a prairie community of grasses and wild flowers through the seasons, noting the underground growth and changing surface, and ends with an explanation of the benefits of fire to the prairie ecology. In prose that is smooth but not sharp, and with fine-line black-and-white drawings that are most successful when least prominently featured, the book reads and looks much like Lerner's Flowers of a Woodland Spring (1979).
