This is fun, this newly discovered diary of Daniel Webster's wife, a running commentary on their European trip in 139. It is a detailed daily record of people, places, houses, palaces, furniture, etiquette, customs, dress, as they travel from Liverpool to London in a confusion of entertainment, ""dissipation"" and ""dazzling"" backgrounds. In spite of her rheumatism, shopping and sightseeing must go on. Then to Walse and Scotland without him to the Continent. Receptions, theatres, Kings, and Queens, nobility and famous names -- and Mrs. W. loving every moment of it, though comparing many things unfavorably with American ways, and a bit touchy if Mr. W's importance is not properly recognized. Personal tidbits, observation, good period piece. Dr. Claude M. Fuess, headmaster of Phillips Andover, has written the introduction.
