THE TROUBLE WITH RAPE

Expect no light on dark corners from this lumbering study, based on Denver police records for 1973 and interviews with Denver women who have been assaulted. Who needs to plough through pages of text and tables to reach such conclusions as, ""the more serious the attack, the more likely it is to be reported""? What's to be made of a chapter that speaks out for more treatment programs for rapists and then details only one ""modality""--castration? And who could help snorting at the phrase ""milady's vagina"" or the notion that if women raped men, the men would think, ""What an easy way to cheat on one's wife!""? A tedious, out-of-date book.
