This is really a volume of short stories about Ann's year in Hildsborough, New Hampshire. There is great advantage in each chapter completing a story, for when bed-time comes the young reader can finish off and obey that annoying order of g. to b. There is charm in these tales about Peter, the dog, and his rapping leg; the Ticklish Brushman; Mr. Pickle, the local grocer, and his competition with the new cash and carry; the goose for the new pastor; and the Donation Party. There is appeal in mention of Valentines, hickory-nut dolls, corncob houses, mailorder catalogues and patch-work quilts.
