A fine tale of haunted gold and Texan ingenuity in the Old West. Even drowned, Fearless Bones Kelly jealously guards his treasure, slopping water all over anyone who dares haul it up from the Red River. When Whizbrain Wallerbee walks into Amarillo to apply for a patent on an ice-box railroad car, Red River Renata (mayor, sheriff, fire marshall, postmaster--and patent agent) sees a unique opportunity: the two haul ice down from Denver, freeze the ghost, substitute sand for the gold in the chest, and proceed to live together in prosperous contentment for the rest of their lives. Cheery watercolors complement the story's lighthearted tone. Readers aren't likely to find Kelly very convincing (though supposedly famous for his cursing, ""Darn! Dang! Drat!"" seems to be the best he can come up with), but Renata and W.W. make an engaging couple.
