THE SLEEPING SALAMANDER

This is chateau country Gothic from Touraine to Brittany and Miss Carfax is one of those strenuous programmers who would be equal to staging a son et lumiere spectacle at the city dump. Anyway Jan goes to visit her French friend Margot -- to learn that her father has been selling off his antiquities -- and to meet her disastrously attractive brother Alain. The salamander was the emblem of Francois I and it literally leads them underground to a search for a treasure through flues and cellars that flood at high tide. Even if you ordinarily expose your credibility to these conditions, there has to be lots of leeway for other extravagances from a necklace designed for the Borgias (come now) to lots of rose-in-bloom scenery.
