If they are willing to put themselves through her structured sequence of twelve lessons--from values in black and white and mixing primaries to get secondary colors through mixing and working with low and high key triads and analogous groupings--would-be painters without access to a live teacher will indeed learn something about producing predictable colors. It's a dull route, however, with indifferent assignments (copy the value arrangement in a newspaper picture; paint a landscape using this triad), much dogged repetition (perhaps the author, a teacher of painting, is accustomed to slow or inattentive classes), and, regrettably, only black and white diagrams to illustrate the exercises. (The only color plates are clumped together without comment and include a few charts and several conventional paintings by the author and her students.) Drab.
