Gifted with a strange, wild innocence (Gaston is the authority here), Caroline still finds it salutary- and necessary- to try many beds in her travels through embittered, embattled France. All this, and homosexuality too, she tells her lovely self have nothing to do with the pure nobility of her love for Gaston. Caroline's family try to guarantee her safety by marrying her to Georges, whose Girondism forces him to flee from Jacobin Paris. Caroline follows him, but finally tacks off for Paris again with money stolen from her husband. Disguised, usually as a boy, she engages in love and adventure and calmly lets one man be killed for her sake. She is arrested, but wins a temporary respite from the death sentence through Gaston, and finally- slightly chastened- she sets sail for America as a cabin-boy... Amber maybe- but not forever.
