CELESTINO PIATTI'S ANIMAL ABC

You could do an ABC of extravagant adjectives for Mr. Piatti's outstanding illustrations. He is one of the most noted European poster artists and the author/illustrator of the very well-received The Happy Owls (1964)--and this book is a bolster to his reputation. His A to Z menagerie, all done with the heavy black outlines and extraordinarily rich coloring of stained glass, includes a gracefully bent double spread giraffe, and African-angular red orangutan, a limpid-eyed yak--practically any one could be someone's favorite. The accompanying verses are inconsequential but amusing. The book is designed for easy lap-holding and long looking.
