The revived interest in liturgical reform, energized by Mediator Del, and encouraged by modification in public worship being made by the Holy See, is being further strengthened by a number of important books clarifying the meanings behind the movement. This slim but most readable and tightly written book by an editor of the Clergy Review happily complements another worthwhile recent title, Father H. A. Reinhold's Dynamics of (Macmillan). While Father Reinhold demonstrates the vitality and meaningfulness of the great cycles of the Church year and the fullness to be realized from the liturgy, Father Davis shows how integral and valid to life in the Mystical Body the liturgical movement is, by documenting and elaborating on its doctrinal basis. Father Davis produces a new understanding of Christ in terms of great significance of the resurrection, gives a new sense of the Bible as the history of salvation, and clarifies the role of liturgical assembly. This book supplies a richer insight into Christ's saving work particularly in the Eucharist and the Sacraments. Liturgy and Doctrine demonstrates that the liturgical movement is a responsible and indispensable activity aimed at restoring man to wholeness of spiritual life.
