This is perhaps the most distinguished volume of American verse to have come out of the war. It is a slim volume written by a staff sgt. of the US army air forces who was formerly a young librarian. True that Mr. Butler is not a finished poet, true that his technique is often unsure and imitative, but also true that his perceptions and reactions are sensitive, deep and unique, compassionate without being soft, nostalgic without being sentimental, hard in a modern way without being merely intellectual. It may be that the book will not have a wide appeal but I believe it should have a definite, eager purpose among cultivated civilians.
