Again the East meets West and here is Mick Pritchard, English and semi-engaged to Canadian Pam when war breaks out, in Hong Kong. Staying to defend the city he is captured and, as a prisoner of war of the Japanese, he learns one face of the enemy, one to hate. An unsuccessful attempt to escape brings him to the home of school-master Nishe Sensel in Shimaguchi and there he learns another face of Japan, that of understanding, kindness, atonement, as the schoolmaster's daughter, Machan, becomes his loving nurse and as the secret leaks out and the whole village contributes to his convalescence. When the war is over and Mick makes two attempts to return to his old world, he realizes that neither Pam nor the business world he knew are for him and that Machan and Shimaguchi hold his heart. Friendly and warm, this is ingratiating.
