THE BIRTHDAY WISH

Oh stars, how will I ever get my birthday wish when I took Judy's,"" Allison wails at bedtime, for in her excitement over her own impending fifth birthday she has blown out the candles on her friend's cake. But Allison's wish for snow comes true anyway (""Oh, Mommie, look, this is my white birthday!"") and she redeems herself by letting Judy blow out her candles -- for ""After all, I got my wish."" To match the insipid story Iwasaki's pretty watercolor world of childhood is a wishy wash of pastel colored clothes and houses, shimmering candles and soft tissuey settings.
