Without extending or elaborating on the experiences a boy and his teddy bear might share, Nakatani simply enumerates a few telling ones--a walk on a nice day, ""bits of rice stuck to our faces,"" and finally bath time for first bear and then his master. As with a similar boy's discovery of The Zoo in My Garden (1973), the rewards are subtle but palpable--steady eye contact with both bear and his pink-cheeked owner, spiffy oilcloth-textured colors, and not least of all the fact that the boy is quite naturally, unstereotypically Japanese.
