THE OUTDOOR WOMAN'S GUIDE TO SPORTS, FITNESS AND NUTRITION

Encouragement and aid for women considering the strenuous, challenging outdoor sports: backpacking, hiking, snowshoeing, climbing and mountaineering, canoeing (and other paddle sports), Nordic skiing and ski mountaineering. Weight training and cardiovascular fitness, the authors note, are absolute prerequisites for these activities (with special attention to the development of upper body strength which most women lack). Then, they describe each sport; relate experiences of women pros; discuss specific training and preparation measures, equipment, and common injuries. (Joints are variously susceptible, sunburn can be severe, bears should not be treated lightly.) Women may be surprised by their potential strength, say Maughan and Collins, also dismissing still-prevalent myths (sagging breasts, and such). Anyone seriously pursuing one of these sports will want an individal guide; but for shopping around, this is ideal.
