Third in Claire Huchet Bishop's lives of saints (see Christopher the Giant and Bernard and His Dogs) is the biography of the Spanish-Negro Dominican monk who worked as doctor and helper of the poor in a time and place of dramatic contrast- colonial Lima, Peru. In her characteristically spare style that goes quickly to the elements of a situation, Mrs. Biship makes Martin de Porres the striking figure he was. One of those rare souls who loved all life before himself, Martin's strength of purpose led him to survive a climate of hatred and prejudice that pervaded his youth. He was educated in Guayaquil but returned to study medicine and become a Dominican lay brother- to do good by teaching and helping the unrecognized poor in a country that belonged to the rich. Though Martin died in 1639, he was beatified two centuries later and became Peru's Patron of Social Justice only in 1939. The book is a tribute to a life of love in a time of injustice.
