This launches a new series of lives of the saints, with a reverent, thoroughly readable life of a popular saint, patron of travelers. His story is a familiar one, in the best tradition of giant legends, and through the centuries has been embroidered with details. Claire Bishop (Pancakes-Paris, etc.) has handled her material, telling it as straight story, as Christopher, first known as Rabrab, kept moving on seeking the ruler who feared naught, was most powerful of all. He served an earthly emperor; then the devil himself; finally the Christ, unseen and demanding only the lowliest of labors, carrying travelers across the stream. Then comes the ultimate test, and Rabrab finds that the burden which weighed him down was the Christ himself. He becomes a Christian, and withstands the pressures applied to him, and at the end converts the Emperor Decius and reputedly 8000 of his subjects.
