An appealing and practised performance which sends most of your two dollar a dozen of the rental trade back to grade school. Best of its breed -- a woman's light novel a considerable cut above the conventional output. It has all the things it should have, -- likely, likable people, faced with credible conflicts and sound response in character. This is the story of Jessica, widowed at 33 after her husband's protracted illness. She refuses to shut herself in with the mementoes her mother insists on; she takes up a normal life, only to find herself tormented by her need to forget on one hand, her sense of guilt in forgetting. Then comes Scott, masculine, decisive, set upon remaining permanently footloose. She falls in love -- he wants an affair or nothing -- she takes her half a loaf. While she learns to subdue her greater need -- he finds that, after all, he wants the more stable relationship. This is that most difficult of books to find, -- a modern novel, with problems that have the ring of truth, situations that are of daily occurrence, deftly handled. P.L's -- watch your step.
