This is the story of Peter Green, a little French boy who was kidnapped by the gypsy, Aiello, and taken to an abandoned palace in the African sand dunes which Aiello used as a hideout, and which Peter believed to be his royal realm. There, in the care of fat, indulgent Benita, Peter found an Eden where nothing ever died and an enchantment he could never escape, even after his return to France where he wasted away -- and died. There's poinansy here, grace, if a lyricism perhaps too lacy for American tastes.
