The author, Dr. Clayton E. Williams, has been the minister of the American Church in Paris for over 25 years, but this is the first book of his published sermons. It is good evidence of the high quality of his preaching. These are Holy Week, Good Friday and Easter sermons and they succeed in moving the reader from tragedy to triumph. It is not easy to travel this familiar road and see or say anything different from what others have said before, and often, but Dr. Williams' treatment of his subject lends an impelling urgency to the drama that will make his book more than ordinarily useful as evotional reading for the latter part of Lent. The book has two sermons for Palm Sunday, for Maundy Thursday, two for Good Friday, plus a series on the Seven Last Words, and for Easter. Doubtless this is Dr. Williams at his best, and it adds up to one of better books for Lent to be published this year.
