THE NEWCOMER

A poignant portrait of a boy's agony of spirit by an author with a faculty for making important all those silly (to most adults) criteria by which a boy makes the grade. Chick faces the problem of being taken into the crowd in his new home town. All he asked was to be taken as a regular fellow- as he had been before-but he tried too hard, his timing went wrong, his motives were misinterpreted and he had to cope with symptoms of jealousy before his year of maladjustment came to an easier end. Must reading.
