The novel from which the extremely amusing, enjoyable and photogenic moving picture was made proves no twice-told tale. For the ludicrous agonies of the inhabitants of Little Todday when their liquor is cut off are as wryly diverting as its animated version, from the return of the Sergeant Major to claim his bride to the wet, wet wedding celebration. And this fills in all the little bits about the people -- their anguish at the thought of a non-alcoholic island, their subservience to the Sabbath laws, the anxious joy over the ship that has foundered and whose cargo is liquor, and the gigantic efforts to get that cargo, home guard, law -- or no, and their successful evasion of the excisemen. Gaelic humor and speech, this adds up to a well wetted-down yarn.
