A man of genius, John Ericksson from early childhood on showed a prodigious talent for engineering. At the age of six he amazed his family and neighbors in Lapland by constructing a replica of the intricate mine machinery with which his father worked. His talent soon brought him into favor with the Bernadotte family and thus was launched a career of great personal loneliness and professional success, a career which through the invention of the navy ship Monitor brought the North its first great victory in the Civil War.
