Rapid, romantic period adventure in the Farnol tradition but minus the Zounds and Egads. The first part deals with Dugald MacLean's childhood in Scotland when his father goes off to fight for Bonnie Prince Charlie, loses his lands and his petulant, treacherous wife. The second part occurs twenty years later in America, when Dugald, dark, ugly, but gallant fights in the Indian wars, rescues a little French girl of twelve who is adopted by the family. In the third part he realizes his love for his adopted sister who is now a woman, leaves her thinking that she wishes to marry his handsome brother, and goes off for more adventure. When he comes back to the girl at the close he finds both peace and love. Lots of raring-to-go-material, and of its kind very readable.
