Some dozen or more of our ""national ballads"" are presented with the sort of historical and biographical background that is difficult to find when most needed:- Yankee Doodle, Hail Columbia, Star Spangled Banner, Home Sweet Home, Columbia the Gem of the Ocean, Dixie, John Brown's Body, Battle Cry of Freedom, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Marching through Georgia, America the Beautiful and God Bless America -- these form the core of the book. But in addition other war ballads, from the Civil War through World War II, Negro songs, songs of such writers as Stephen Foster and George Roote are discussed with the events which brought them into being and the use to which they have been put. The revision and reissue of this standard work is welcome news for schools and libraries.
