This is the second and concluding volume (1967--p. 1101) on Custer's short and seething career. At this point the most youthful of all the Union generals is ready to lead his troop of over two hundred men to total annihilation at Little Big Horn in 1876. In so doing, he died at the age of 36. The author, himself part Sioux, provides a popular treatment which can be added to the already existing literature of romantic versions and personal memoirs (strangely enough, Custer's wife Elizabeth only died in 1933). But the work does not add to a better understanding of his 1867 court-martial, his embittered relationship with President Grant, or the motivation for his foolish and divisive strategy in his doomed, attack against the Sioux.
