The year is 1945, and here are some fourteen short stories, one each from the S.E.P., Collier's, and the Cosmopolitan, and the balance from Argosy and the miscellaneous detective magazines, which the editor found best but which he admits is largely a question of personal predilection. With the exception of Q. Patrick and Bruno Fischer, the names are largely new to the book reading murder market. The stories, relying on shock, surprise techniques, do not meet stricter sleuthing qualifications, are readable rathern than reliable, and what with the boom business this year in anthologies of this order- you can find better.
