A RESPECTABLE WOMAN

A Respectable Woman can be as misleading as A Loveable Man (1974) and this is Mr. Fletcher's even more subtle and insidious story of what underlies those deep-running still waters, particularly in a little English village like Market Gidding, fending off change. But who would kill a harmless, aging spinster like Polly Dancer? And why would beautiful, rich and always composed Jane Armitage agree to marry the unlikely Robin Selby who had lived too long with an emasculating mother and now receives unpleasant letters (later, his ear will be cut off). John Cresswell, of the CID, returns to his native town to handle the case and his own unresolved life; while surely but slowly one of those singular cases of folie a deux surfaces again. A fastidious horror story which invites your full interest-better yet, justifies it.
