THE KING'S ASTRONOMER: WILLIAM HERSCHEL

One of the most interesting astronomers in a particularly accurate and interesting account. From musician to astronomer, from Germany to Britain's Royal Court, Herschel, working with his scientist-sister, was the epitome of the genius and creator. Builder of the biggest telescope of his age, he became the discoverer of the planet Uranus and pioneered the mapping of the galaxy. His intent was apparently unswerving from the earliest: he used money won in musical competitions to purchase astronomical devices. Woven through the story of developing science are the family frictions that were a great part of his working life. Well-informed and fully fleshed.
