MY DOG, TRIP

A sentimental story of a little girl and her dog, set in the mountains of West Virginia. Soft charcoal drawings on each page and the brief text capture the humor, love, and warmth of a Close-knit family and the special relationship of the little girl and her dog. However, the use of dialect, especially dropping the final ""g"" on all ""ing"" words, is irritating, and may cause problems for the young reader for whom the story is intended. When her daddy brings home a tiny, weak, orphan dog, Allie is determined to raise it, even though her mama says: ""He don't look like he got long for this world neither."" The pup grows into a healthy, frisky dog named Trip (for his ""trippin'-up feet""). When Trip wanders off, Allie ""Can't think of nothin' else for wonderin' will Trip be there when I get home."" After a worrisome week, Trip is found and reunited with Allie. For young dog-fanciers who have outgrown controlled vocabulary books and are not yet ready for chapter books.
