COFFIN CORNER

The likable Lt. Mendoza is back on deck and he has an equally pleasant new partner, Detective Jason Grace. But this case is decidedly not routine. It revolves around the death of a Mrs. McCann who had run a sleazy ""private"" hotel. Her tenants are unusual to say the least... including a ""Friendly Undertaker."" The proceedings become more bizarre as the detectives are hard put to discover whose garden is growing the common foxglove, which under certain planned circumstances becomes a deadly poison. Then they discover that the deceased had owned one solid city block of L.A. It's Mary, Mary quite contrary all the way and the writing is, as always, competent.
