THE YEAR OF THE HORSE

A year of miracles wrought by a horse called Horse. . . as Joanna Longfellow progresses from bareback novice to competition class rider; John Holmes gets up the courage to walk out on his family's equestrian tradition; Mr. Longfellow changes from a dissatisfied snob into a country-loving gentleman; Mr. Holmes mutates from a martinet into a paragon of empathy; Horse gives birth to a horselet; and Grandma even gets herself a husband, Horse's elderly owner Mr. Archer. With all the blessings showering down, this is light on the kind of tackroom pointers and horsemanship lessons that the genre's audience demands. Joanna's hard work rewarded and the glow of mutual good feelings make this a minimally satisfactory confidence-builder for wherever horse is a magic word.
