THE DIARY OF TRILBY FROST

On a Tennessee farm around the turn of the century, Trilby grows from a tomboy whose best friend is the half-Cherokee bastard Saul Edwards to a young girl flustered by the feelings she has when Saul kisses her. Her story is set down in the diary presented to Trilby by her father, who hints at a secret to be revealed later; some time after he dies Trilby does find out that she too is a bastard, the product of an extramarital affair between her father and an actress who died in childbirth. Also recorded in the diary, credibly and unsentimentally, are the death of Trilby's little brother (half brother), her older sister's pregnancy and the guilty boarder's skipping out before the wedding, and, at the end, tough independent Saul's own pathetic death from tetanus. None of these disasters seems gratuitous; on the contrary, having to grow up in harder times will be among Trilby's attractions.
