The aftermath of a benevolent gesture has more than its just rewards when Dr. Sandilands, to help aging, ailing Mrs. Hovenden, gives her some money in exchange for five trunks of papers, linens, and pictures which were called by his more practical daughter, Beatrix, the Kovenden horrors. But in the disposition of their contents, Stephanie du Plessis, a young librarian, appraises the pictures as old masters, traces their origins to the Italian Renaissance as part of the collection of Lorenzo de Medici, and has them sent on to Sir Harry Maximer, a famous connoisseur and dealer, for an expert opinion. Sir Harry declares them worthless- for his own purpose, arranges to have them bought up for a fraction of their value, but in his wily plan is defeated by the stubborn Stephanie- and Arnold Bayley, a neighboring museum director, who establish the authenticity of the paintings and disestablish Sir Harry with equal audacity and ingenuity.... A very polite and pleasant entertainment of tell-tale transactions.
