An interpretation of art vs marriage, as Mary, free to paint when Max is off to war, finds herself in a dilemma on his return. Mary's coming show, her dependence on her teacher, Julian, whose promise of genius has never been realized, her conflicts with her mother, her small son, her husband- these build up tensions which cause illness and growing desperation. When Max realizes he cannot hold her, when his family keep Stephen, the pull between Mary, her mother and Julian strengthens, and it is only when Stephen, Mary and her mother find an isolated holiday spot, that Mary finds her answer to her problem. Sensitive in its probing, but sometimes hysterical in manner, this is 100% feminine.
