Aiming to present ""the best or most interesting"" restaurants in San Francisco, Mrs. Muscatine serves up some 171 tested recipes from some fifty eateries ranging from posh to unpretentious, from the Sheraton-Palace Hotel to Mike's Billiard Parlor, and offering tempting cosmopolitan fare of all sorts. A soupcon of culinary history starts the menu rolling, and in each presentation the flavor of the restaurant as well as its food is fondly considered. San Francisco specialties (sour dough bread, crab Louis, etc.) are not forgotten amid a welter of continental cuisines considered in turn: French, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Armenian and German cookery each receive special attention. Each restaurant is classified as to price, two or three specialties of the house give in full for the home chef, and the information is completed by a back-of-the-book listing of addresses, telephone numbers, and hours. Deftly, this zeros in on the home front gourmets who will enjoy the personalities and backdrop as much as the recipes, and for the tourist with a fondness for good eating.
