A humanized story of bees, about as bad as Maeterlinck's is good. The bees of Apis City think seriously about such questions as to whether or not drones must be forcibly expelled at the onset of famine, shed tears at the departure of an old queen and so forth. Granted the bee story is a poignant one and granted this emotionalized version follows their cycle with care, but the illustrations by Helen Heywood, lurid, graphic accounts in lavenders, pea greens, yellows, make the whole a little unbearable. An unprofitable source of nature study.
