To appreciate this study and the accompanying 165 plates-- mainly black and white sketches-- one must have a sound knowledge of art, particularly of Picasso's art. This collection explores Picasso's fascination with Manet's Dejeuner Sur l'Herbe; here are nearly 167 variations on a theme, variations so slight that only the art historian or advanced student will be appreciative. Mr. Cooper presents a lengthy explanation of Picasso's obsession; he refers to appropriate plates in the margins as he progresses slowly from discussing the onset of Picasso's interest in 1959 to the artist's triumph in 1961. A book more suited to the art scholar than to the fancier.
