One day in the life of a fisherman is captured in simple prose and cheerful watercolor illustrations. Children will learn some basic facts about the way a fisherman works, such as how he sails out to sea, casts his net in the water, hauls it in, throws back the fish he can't sell, and brings the daily catch to market. While the illustrations are fine, the book would have profited greatly from the use of photographs as a means of making the images vivid to young eyes. Although not without charm, the illustrations lack descriptive power and immediacy. A real opportunity for visual display (imagine photos of fish writhing on a deck or laid gleaming at the fish market) was missed. An interesting and useful text that would have been made memorable with the right visuals.
