Not a discussion of the personal relationship between doctor and patient, as the title would indicate, but of the social aspects of medicine today, of methods which will bring better medical service to more people. The dilemma of the general practitioner, overtired, overworked, outrun by new methods. The author's counterbalance in the plan for a ""pilot physician"", midway between the general practitioner and the specialist. Group health plans; the importance of preventive medicine, of periodic checkups, of the treatment of the emotional as well as the physical. Medical training, and the limiting factor of racial discrimination; medical research; interstate and national medical care; these and other factors are touched on in a general discussion levelled at the public interest.
