It seems a far cry from sculpture to freighting and hauling sportsmen and tourists along the coast of Norway -- but such is the story of Dudley Talcott. He wearied of Paris and went to Norway, exploring the coast by canoe through four summer seasons. In somewhat casual fashion he courted a Norwegian girl for seven years, and acquired with her a 245 pound father-in-law, the grandest character in the book. He inherited some money and invested it in a fishing vessel, which his father-in-law used for freighting in the seasons when they could not carry tourists. Woven through the story is the artist's philosophy of life, closely bound up with his artistic principles. There is something of the flavor of Rockwell Kent's N By E in this book. Good reading.
