STAND BY FOR DANGER

Dave, Stuart and Ned, of E. D. Mygatt's former Rim Rocked (1952)- a western uranium discovery story- are joined by their friend Pelican at their eastern boys' school for some startling and highly readable adventures with a ham radio outfit. Mostly, it is Ned's and Pelican's story, for both have their problems- Ned has a reputation for trouble shooting and Pelican as a new boy is, at nineteen, old for the senior class. Over their room is an attic, a perfect set up for Ned's radio rig. To relieve the respective chips on their shoulders, though honest Pelican has his doubts about disobeying orders, they install the rig and almost immediately become involved with Zink, a Czechoslovakian student whose father is under threat from the Communists for trying to get jet plane plans to the U. S. government. Exciting combined efforts rescue Zink's father, but that in itself is almost secondary to the true merit of the book. For besides the wealth of information about the value and procedure of setting up a school radio station, that only hints at the thrill involved, it is an artfully written story showing true characters in the situations that make them grow.
