If you remember The Garden of Sand or Tattoo, you'll either step in it again or around it--this lesser adventure story of Johnny Hand who finally tries to pick up some change by running guns to Castro. It ends in bloodshed--his woman Lupe is killed, he kills his mate, a rummy. Until then, however, the book is just another kind of discharge since Johnny who walks tall and erect, is always in the sack with Lupe's ""little motor."" Professionally Johnny's a shrimper--cruising the contested territorial waters in and around Tampico. But along with a tour of the cantinas and latrinas and curanderas, there are a few tired remarks on the ways of the world. Caldo Largo, by the way, is not a place but the ""soup of life"" which is boiling in the pot, whiffily.
