RED IN THE MORNING

Eric Purvis, a cardiac surgeon, finds that he is unable to deal with other than organic disturbances when a patient he has cured becomes embarrassingly grateful, watches him from morning to night from her red car, and sends him anonymous gifts under pseudonymous names. His beautiful wife Virginia, pregnant and bored - is somewhat stimulated by the notion of his possible infidelity; his lawyer frankly doubtful that there are not some grounds for Lillian Munson's persistent transference. Finally Eric, no longer capable of professional detachment, brings the matter to court where the woman is proved to be irrational but given, unwisely, a probationary period of freedom which leads to an unnecessary show of violence... The man- molested- is generically a stock figure of fun rather than pity and Eric, something of a prude to begin with, won't offset the notion,- let alone the opportunity this doctor's dilemma affords- for a discussion of sex and display of hyster-lonica.
