This third volume of the publisher's ""Theological Soundings"" series is a collection of seven of Schillebeeckx's articles, dating from 1958 to 1967, on the subject of the fundamental principles which govern practical relations between God and man. Schillebeeckx is concerned particularly with the tension existing between the religious life and secularism, the resolution of which he finds in increased emphasis on the basic identification between the two aspects of human life--i.e., spiritual and secular. Within that context, he treats of the concepts of God and of the spiritual life, of Christian secularity, and of the moral norms which flow from an integration of secular and religious values. None of these are ideas which the Schillebeeckx reader will find startlingly new; they have been enunciated before by him and by others. The value of the book lies in the fact that it serves to synthesize the author's thoughts on the subject, and therefore provides an introduction to his two future books in the series, one on the general principles of religion and the other on those of Christian secularism. A worthwhile acquisition for theological libraries both Catholic and Protestant.
