MR. HOBB'S VACATION

That pertinent observer of family foibles here impales the American vacation as it is experienced by the Hobbs from Cleveland. Rock Harbor has been recommended and to that island they migrate, there to adjust themselves as comfortably as possible to a month of inconveniences, strangers, shopping, married daughters and children to visit, parties and getting along with the natives. The eccentricities of the rented house, the arts of sailing, guests who are birdwatchers, droppers-in, the payment of social debts, sons in law who see eye to eye only with Mr. Hobbs' daughters, their unmarried chick gallivanting and appearing only spasmodically -- all this has a familiar and recognizable ring which should summon a vast proportion of the populace. As with The Father Of The Bride, the familiarity here is companionably humorous rather than sardonic.
