AFRICAN SLAVERY

This short history of the slave trade emphasizes the differences between American slavery and the milder, less extensive forms of servitude practiced in Africa itself, the horrible conditions of the mid-passage and later British efforts to suppress the trade with its Africa Squadron. Hoyt includes some interesting anecdotes not encountered in other juvenile surveys -- such as the fortunate history of the slave Job ibn Solomon who was discovered to be an Arabic scholar and eventually returned home through the influence of prominent Englishmen, but essentially he elaborates, rather than supersedes, the numerous more comprehensive treatments of the subject.
