From Aesop to the American Girl, from Anna Sewell to Lincoln Steffens, the sources of this fine anthology extend across space and time and the only common quality is quality itself, and the focus on the horse rather than on his admirers. Some of the seventeen stories are excerpts that will lead the reader to the original--Nicholas Kalashnikoff's Jumper, Misty of Chincoteague. The Friendly Persuasion; others come from collections of tales, real or imaginative-- Wild Animals I Have Known. Wonder Book; a few--by Vivian Breckenfeld, William Cunningham--appeared in periodicals. Each (except perhaps the first) is sufficiently engrossing, and the collection is sufficiently varied, to please even those children who are not members of the horsey set.
