NIGHTMARE OF THE DARK

Robert Lindner is ten years old when he becomes #615491 in a concentration camp and this account of his survival includes some of the most rabid incidents which have risen out of the ashes of Auschwitz. At the end of a Years an S.S. homosexual reunites him with his mother whom he then strips and feeds to the dogs. Dully, obdurately, the boy endures from day to day until finally he makes a friend--a newcomer, Michael. They are eventually assigned to working, the ovens and finally, with Michael and another internee, Kurt, manage to escape. The long vendetta begins--they kill as unflinchingly as they have watched thousands die; they finally are forced to put a bullet through Michael, hemorrhaging, dying too slowly; they do achieve his objective--Robert now fourteen reaches SwitZerland.... Mr. Silberstang's nondescript, matter of fact prose permits the story to proceed in an unimpeded fashion and he who (who? this is a reluctant audience) reads it will do so in a numbed but immobilized condition.
