An agreeable, sentimental English-village mystery--which starts off when Scotland Yard's Neil Carter vacations in wee Bunington, hoping to interview Annabel Quillin, innocent wife of a vanished bank robber. But, as Neil starts falling for Annabel, attempted murder pops up: there's cyanide in the Church's communion cup--and the handsome young curate almost drinks it. But though suspicion falls on old eccentric ""BB"" (the dear pal of Annabel's sweet kid brother Tony), other suspects must be considered when, after BB dies of a stroke, the cyanide trick is tried again on the curate. . . and works. Was it the vicar, whose gorgeous wife was seen with the curate? Or other local husbands and fathers who resented the curate's attractiveness? Neil eventually nabs the culprit--an unlikely, largely implausible one--and he builds a strong friendship with young Tony: But the romance with Annabel is doomed. . . . Middling mystery, likable trimmings: a fairly welcome new arrival from Britain.
